We’re coming to you LIVE from Queenstown and Auckland, New Zealand for the 2023 Michael Hill International Violin Competition.
The top three finalists will perform in the grand final concert with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra at Auckland’s Town Hall on June 10, 2023 — in line to receive coveted prizes that will launch their music careers.
First place involves a $40,000 (NZ) cash prize, a recording contract with the Atoll label, and a multi-center Winners Tour with Chamber Music New Zealand in 2024. Among the event’s awards also includes a three-year loan of a fine violin by Rare Violins of New York.
The jury will comprise Bella Hristova, Ning Feng, Natalia Lomeiko, Wilma Smith, Piers Lane, James Ehnes, and Anthony Marwood — along with past MHIVC winners.

16 competitors will perform Bach solo works, Paganini caprices, salon pieces and the popular Ad Libitum selection of their own choosing with collaborating pianists Sarah Watkins and Somi Kim.

Each of the 16 candidates will perform sonatas, a brand-new commission by Michael Norris and virtuosic show pieces.

The advancing six semi-finalists’ will lead Mozart string quintets with Amalia Hall, Gillian Ansell, Robert Ashworth and Ashley Brown.

Public performances by NZTrio and international soloist Ning Feng plays solo Bach and Piazzola with Sarah Watkins and Ashley Brown.
SATURDAY 10 JUNE | FINAL ROUND | AUCKLAND TOWN HALL, GREAT HALL
Three finalists will each perform a concerto with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and conductor Andrew Litton.
