Tchaikovsky’s ‘Variations On a Rococo Theme’ Premiered On This Day in 1877 [ON-THIS-DAY]

Tchaikovsky’s ‘Variations on a Rococo Theme‘ Op. 33 for Cello and Orchestra premiered on this day in 1877.

The first performance was given by German virtuoso Wilhelm Fitzenhagen in Moscow – conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein.

The 20-minute bravura work is a much loved standard in today’s cello competition and concert repertoire.
