Tchaikovsky’s ‘Variations on a Rococo Theme‘ Op. 33 for Cello and Orchestra premiered on this day in 1877.
The first performance was given by German virtuoso Wilhelm Fitzenhagen in Moscow – conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein.
The 20-minute bravura work is a much loved standard in today’s cello competition and concert repertoire.
