Sir William Walton’s Cello Concerto Premiered on This Day in 1957 [ON-THIS-DAY]

Sir William Walton‘s Cello Concerto premiered on this day in 1957.

The first performance was given by Russian-born American virtuoso Gregor Piatigorsky, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra – under the baton of Charles Munch.

It’s believed Walton regarded the concerto more favourably than his violin and viola works.
